Speaker Mahara resigns following allegation of sexual misconduct to a woman

Kathmandu, Oct. 1: Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has resigned from his post. He tendered his resignation to Deputy Speaker Dr. Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe.

The Speaker stated in his resignation letter that he decided to tender his resignation on moral grounds, to be effective from today until the investigation process is concluded, so as to facilitate in the factual, free and fair investigation into the allegations leveled on him raising serious questions over his character in various media since yesterday.

Earlier, a Secretariat meeting of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) had advised him to resign from the post, citing that a question was raised in regard to his morality. He has been accused of sexually harassing a woman.

Meantime, Nepali Congress has demanded that the resignation tendered by Speaker Krsihna Bahadur Mahara should be clear.

Organizing a press meet at the party headquarter Sanepa today,  Nepali Congress spokesperson Bishow Praskash Sharma also said based on the accusation against Mahara should be independently investigated and the process should be forwarded as a normal citizen.

Nepali Congress has also urged the government to correct the course saying with the activities of the government have spread pessimism and aversions in society.

Likewise, Nepali Congress has expressed distress at the attacks on the Nepali Congress cadres.
