Communication Minister Gurung affirms protection from state for journalists working at risk

Kathmandu: Communication and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung has emphasized the state’s commitment to protecting journalists who courageously raise their voices against injustice.

Speaking at the ‘Hem-Sunil Risky Television Journalism Award’ ceremony organized by the Nepal Television Chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, the Communication Minister acknowledged the critical role of the communication sector in advancing democratic movements, even in the face of significant risks.

Minister Gurung also announced that the implementation of the Public Service Broadcasting Act is forthcoming, promising to systematize the operations of Nepal Television and Radio Nepal. He called on both agencies to collaborate effectively in this endeavour.

Likewise, Radhika Aryal, the Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, emphasized that both agencies should cooperate in the implementation of the Public Service Broadcasting Act.

At the event, the Hem-Sunil Risky Television Journalism Award was presented to five journalists: Home Karki, Prakash Timalsina, and Shyam Shrestha from Kantipur Media Group, along with Durgakumari Bhatta and Bipin Srivastava from Nepali Television. Each recipient received a cash prize of Rs 100,000 and a copper plate as recognition of their contributions.

Samirjung Shah, Executive Chairman of Nepal Television, noted that such awards provide vital encouragement for journalists operating in challenging conditions. General Manager Fulman Bal Tamang expressed hopes for a future where the need for risky journalism is minimized, underscoring the importance of a safe environment for media professionals.
