Chaupadi System abolishment committee to be formed soon: Home Minister Lamichhanne

Kathmandu: A committee is to be formed by coordinating with related ministries to abolish practices like Chaupadi.

The committee will give a thorough report to the Home Ministry based on the surveys done followed by the reasons for lack of implementation of existing laws.

Based on the suggestions from the committee, the government will then make plans to abolish such practices from society.

Speaking to the women representatives and women rights activists Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Rabi Lamichhane said, “We must not be based on any such incident and rather move to abolish these deep-rooted practices from the society, to stop incidents from occurring again.”

Minister Lamichhanne said, “The incident that occurred in Achham is depressing and the home affairs has been proceeding with all necessary tasks to punish the responsible. Besides, we must also work in order not to let these types of incidents occur again in future.”

In the meeting, the women representatives and women rights activists appealed that making “Chau Goth” and keeping people in them is a criminal activity and everyone who practices these must be brought under the crime zone and punished by strict laws so that no one dares to repeat these mistakes.

Answering this, Minister Lamichhane said that the committee will go through all these suggestions and then the decisions will be made to make strict laws ahead.
