Nepal will champion climate justice at COP29: PM Oli

October 26, Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that Nepal will advocate for the concerns of the Himalayan region and climate justice at the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), scheduled to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan next month.

Addressing the National Climate Summit organized by the Ministry of Forests and Environment on Saturday, PM Oli reiterated the climate justice arguments he presented at the 79th United Nations General Assembly and assured that these would be strongly voiced at COP29.

The third meeting of the National Council for Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Management has resolved to present Nepal’s stance and perspective on climate change at COP29.

President Ram Chandra Paudel is set to lead the Nepali delegation at the conference.

PM Oli emphasized the pivotal role of Nepal’s Himalayas in stabilizing global temperatures. He argued that given the significant contribution of global carbon emissions to the melting of these glaciers, it is imperative for the world to protect the Himalayas and for Nepal to receive adequate compensation from high-emitting countries.
