Concept of ‘zero carbon school’ implemented

Kathmandu, Oct 21: An educational programme on promotion of environmental literacy and evaluation targeting the school students is to be run in Nepal with the objective of facing the challenges of climate change.

This programme is supported by Japan’s Ministry of Education and the Nagoya Sangyo University.

A memorandum of understanding to this effect has been signed between the Nagoya Sangyo University under Japan’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Paschimanchal School based in Pokhara. The MoU is related to expansion of literacy on the condition of carbon dioxide emitted in the atmosphere and the environment status.

This programme, which is being run for the first time in Nepal, is already under implementation in various schools in Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Japan.

The programme helps students understand, in a practical way, on various environment-related topics, including the impact of climate change and the increase in carbon dioxide level. At the same time, it will help students understand climate change impacts while at the same time promoting the environmental literacy.

The programme is implemented in Kaski, Rupandehi, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and Bardia districts of Nepal.

It is run at Paschimanchal Secondary School, the Gandaki Boarding School and Amarsingh Secondary School in Gandaki Province, at the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Sanothimi and the United Academy in Bagmati Province and at Shankarnagar Durgadatta Secondary School and Janata Secondary School in Lumbini Province.

Speaking after the MoU signing programme, Principal of Paschimanchal School, Saroj Koirala expressed happiness that his school has got the opportunity to be a part of the ‘zero carbon school programme’ implemented for the first time in Nepal with the direct involvement of the Government of Japan.

He said this programme will enhance the environmental awareness among the students through practical learning.
