Minister Gurung stresses on full implementation of women’s rights

Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has emphasized full implementation of the women’s rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

At a programme organized by Sancharika Samuha here on Wednesday, Minister Gurung stressed that the Constitution should be fully implemented to change the culture of nepotism existing in politics. ‘There is immense potential for women’s leadership development in an open and pluralistic society like Nepal,’ he underlined, adding along with this, it was necessary to bring transformation in a male-dominated culture.

In a group-wise discussion on the topic ‘Sancharika Talks Series: Together We Lead’, Minister Gurung expressed his view about the situation of women’s leadership and possibilities. Also, the Spokesperson of the government, shared that questions should be raised collectively in all political parties about women’s participation, stating there should be a mandatory one-third participation of women in state bodies.

Pointing out the lack of a notable number of women leaders in the judiciary, he opined that the Constitution has mentioned that women should be either in the post of President or Vice-President but the mentality of appointing women only in deputy positions is wrong.

The Communications Minister shared that capacity building of women should now be the demand of the women’s movement.
