News in diverse languages keeps social diversity intact: Minister Gurung

Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has said news in different languages is essential to keep social diversity intact.

Minister Gurung said it while inaugurating the ‘Nepal Bhasa news service’ launched by Nepal Television today.

‘Nepal is rich in diversity. The diversity needs to be reflected in the news as well. State institutions have roles to paint the country’s mosaic,’ he stressed. The Minister stressed that Nepal Television should foster unity in diversity by incorporating the marginalized communities.

‘The Nepal Television is of the State and it should reflect the state’s character. Many people speak Nepal Bhasa in the Kathmandu Valley. They feel proud to watch and listen to the news in their language,’ he reminded.

Stating that RSS introduced the service in Nepal Bhasa on Tuesday, Minister Gurung mentioned that introducing the service in Nepal Bhasa by Nepal Television and Radio Nepal is a significant move. He stressed that media house should produce and disseminate contents that raise hope among the people.

Similarly, the Secretary at the Ministry, Radhika Aryal, mentioned that Nepal Television has done an important task on time and expressed the belief that such work would also help protect the script of the language spoken largely in this region.

Likewise, the Chairperson of Nepal Television, Samir Jung Shah, shared that Nepal Television was always ready to fulfil its responsibility towards the State despite limited means and resources. General Manager at Nepal Television Phulman Bal said Nepal Television had started broadcasting news in various languages since last year.

It has been broadcasting news in Tamang and Gurung languages since last year. The state-run television started news broadcasting service in Nepal Bhasa, the second most spoken language in Bagmati Province from today.

This initiative is a part of the organization’s effort to promote the State’s priorities on inclusion, added GM Bal. The Nepal Bhasa news will be broadcast at 4:30 PM today on Nepal Television.

According to the census of 2078 BS, approximately 883,000 (3 per cent) of the country’s population speak Nepal Bhasa.
