NRNA provides Rs 5.1 million for Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund

Kathmandu: The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) International Coordinating Council has handed over Rs 5.1 million to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today for the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support victims of recent rain-induced disasters.

A delegation led by NRNA President Dr. Badri KC presented the funds to Prime Minister Oli at his official residence in Baluwatar. Dr. KC expressed sympathy over the recent floods, landslides, and inundations in Nepal, announcing that in addition to the financial support, the NRNA would provide relief materials worth Rs. 10 million for the affected areas.

Prime Minister Oli thanked the association for its humanitarian support during this difficult time. He emphasized that once a Nepali, always a Nepali, regardless of where one lives.

On a different note, Dr. KC raised concerns regarding the challenges faced by non-resident Nepalis after acquiring “NRNA citizenship,” stating that it hinders their ability to contribute economically and socially in Nepal.

In response, Prime Minister Oli clarified that political rights cannot be exercised in Nepal after acquiring foreign citizenship. He called for a serious discussion to resolve the dual citizenship issue. He also highlighted his long-standing interest in the role of non-resident Nepalis in Nepal’s development, emphasizing that those who migrate for work abroad should not be categorized as NRNs.

He urged the NRNA to function as a unified, non-political organization representing all non-resident Nepalis.
