Prime Minister to inaugurate Sunkosi marine diversion project tunnel tomorrow

Khurkot: The completion of the tunnel construction for the Sunkosi Marine Diversion Project, a significant national initiative, has reached a milestone.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda will officiate a breakthrough ceremony for the project’s tunnel tomorrow, May 7.

Local residents in the project’s impact areas anticipate substantial benefits, including reliable irrigation, increased power generation, and improved drinking water access in Terai Madhesh districts of Nepal.

Under the current government’s direction, the project accelerated tunnel construction to meet demand.

The project head, Mitra Baral, expects irrigation services to cover 1 hundred 22,000 hectares across Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, and Bara districts within twelve months of completing the project.

The Sunkosi Marine Diversion Project, utilizing a 13.3 km tunnel, employed advanced methods, including Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology.

Despite challenges, the tunnel’s completion signifies progress toward transformative agricultural development.
