European Union aspiring to increase women’s participation in sports in Karnali

November 6, Surkhet: Staying true to its commitment to gender equality, the European Union (EU) in Nepal is aspiring to increase women’s participation in football in Karnali province.

The topic of women’s participation in sports was raised and discussed during a meeting between the Charge d’affaires of the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal, Joëlle Hivonnet, and the Mayor of Birendranagar Municipality, Mohan Maya Dhakal on Sunday.

Following the meeting, Hivonnet said they had agreed to collaborate via both governmental and non-governmental organisations to increase the EU’s investment in promoting women’s football in Karnali province.

“Investment would be increased for training women football players for their career development. This would enhance self-confidence in women. We are confident this would increase women’s attraction towards football,”.

Hivonnet is in Surkhet to inaugurate the 11th edition of the Nepal European Union Film Festival.

During the meeting, Hivonnet talked about the projects the EU has implemented in Nepal, especially in Karnali province, the future plans, women empowerment and inclusion, among other socioeconomic topics.
