Kathmandu denizens groove to cross-cultural beats of Hip Hop Mela

February 25, Kathmandu: Kathmandu on Saturday witnessed a fusion of cultures and beats as hip-hop artists from the United States and Nepal came together on the stage at the Annapurna Pavilion.

Organized by the U.S. Embassy Kathmandu in collaboration with the Nepal Hip Hop Foundation, the Hip Hop Mela “Kulau Bolau (let’s open up, let’s speak)” proved to be an enthralling celebration of music, dance, and cross-cultural connections.

The event featured a stellar lineup of performers, blending the essence of both American urban culture and Nepal’s budding urban culture, in a unique musical experience. American artists Substantial, DJ Fleg, Shanna Lim, and Mazi Mutafa shared the stage with Nepali talents Laure, Bad Kompany, Professor Trix, Vyoma, Kiran Nepali of Kutumba, Omg Spark and Amazumi, captivating the audience with their diverse styles and rhythms.

The program showcased a spectrum of artistic expressions, including mesmerizing dance performances, soulful music, powerful spoken word, and captivating visual art exhibitions.

According to the U.S Embassy, the event is part of The Arts Envoy HipHop Program 2024, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop’s birth.

Beyond being a platform for entertainment, the Hip Hop Mela aimed at fostering cross-cultural understanding and dialogue on the transformative role of hip-hop as a tool for social change and activism.

The Hip Hop Mela not only celebrated the universal language of music but also served as a bridge connecting two diverse parts of the world through the powerful medium of hip-hop. As the beats resonated in the heart of Kathmandu, the event left a lasting impression, symbolizing the unity that can be achieved through the universal art form that is hip-hop.
