India-Nepal Development Partnership Conclave held in Kathmandu (audio report)

January 24, Kathmandu: The Embassy of India in collaboration with the Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS) on Monday organized a one-day ‘India-Nepal Development Partnership Conclave’ to discuss the history and the future of India-Nepal development endeavours.

Addressing the conclave, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Narayankaji Shrestha said that India was the main development partner of Nepal.

The DPM said, “Nepal and India have shared a cordial relationship helped by the close cultural affinities between the two countries”.

DPM Shrestha mentioned that India built Gaucharan Airport – now Tribhuvan International Airport- in 1954 as Nepal’s first airport and Tribhuvan Highway in 1956.

Shrestha also said India had been supporting Nepal during dire times including the 2015 earthquake and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the conclave, the Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava said that India would leave no stone unturned to provide the necessary development assistance to Nepal to graduate from a Least Developed Country (LDC) category. 

Likewise, the Chief Secretary of the Government of Nepal (GON) Shankardas Bairagi said that various aspects must be considered before starting a development project.

Chief Secretary also lauded the excellent development partnership between Nepal and India.

Speakers at the event including, Commerce Secretary Madhu Kumar Marasini, Physical Infrastructure, and Transport Secretary Keshab Kumar Sharma, Former Vice-Chairperson of the National Planning Commission Dr Swarnim Wagle, Nepal Electricity Authority’s MD Kulman Ghising, among others stressed the need to enhance connectivity, trade of energy, and trade balance between Nepal and India.
