Radio helping students read

February 13, Taplejung: Students in various schools of the district are using a radio to learn about various aspects related to discrimination and violence taking place in the society.

This has been made possible through the Quick Impact Project implemented by READ Nepal with the support of JICA Nepal. The project has been implemented in 10 secondary schools in the district.

For the programme, a group of 10 students including nine female and a male has been formed in every school. The group called leadership and evaluator group listens to the radio programme aired locally and called Our School Radio, Our Future. And in turn, the group discusses what they have learnt with peers in the school.

The members have also been provided with a radio each to listen to the programme where they learn about matters relating to various kinds of discrimination, domestic violence and sexual offence, and ways to minimize them and stay away from them. Accordingly, they talk about the issues as well as of matters of self-respect within their group and among peers.

The project is aimed at increasing the capacity of the students and promoting their right to self-decision, said project manager Rajendra Pant. The project is implemented in Sirijanga rural municipality and in Fattanglung rural municipality.

The project is also promoting life skills, communications skills and leadership development of the students. The groups in the schools are supported by the teachers who have been selected as focal persons for the project.

Along with Taplejung, the project is being implemented in Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Bajhang, Rupandehi and Sindhuli districts.
