Women’s partcipation in sports accelerates gender equality

February 10, 2021: Activists working for women’s empowerment have stressed the importance of women’s participation in sports for accelerating gender equality and enhancing leadership skills.

They expressed such views during the launch event of WE Coach Nepal project held virtually on Wednesday.

WE Coach Nepal is a football coaching project for women which is funded by the US Embassy Kathmandu.

Speaking during the program,  Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) of the US Embassy, Manuel P. Micaller said that women’s participation in sports helped in breaking stereotypes and accelerating gender equality.

“Sports participation helps in building social skills and promoting health and nutrition”, Micaller said adding that women’s involvement in sports would allow them safe spaces and make them role models for the future generations.

DCM Micaller also said that the United States Embassy would always work for the empowerment of women in Nepal.

Also speaking during the program, All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) Karma Tsering Sherpa informed that ANFA had increased its investment in women’s football and expressed his commitment to provide the technical help needed for the WE Coach Nepal project.

In the program, the former participants of the WE Coach Nepal project shared their experiences of the program and reiterated the importance of sports for empowering girls and women.
