Coordination among all three levels of government needed to reduce the risk of natural disasters: Minister Pun

Kathmandu, August 15: Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Barsha Man Pun stressed on the need for coordination among all three levels of government to reduce the risk of natural disasters like floods and inundation.

Addressing a press meet at the ministry today, Minister Pun said all three levels of government should work in coordinated mater to manage the natural flow of the river for the mitigation of risk.

He said the major causes of inundation and flooding in terai are unmanaged extraction of river products, hindrances to the natural flow rivers with river basin encroachment through unplanned settlements. Thus such practices should be checked.

Minister Pun clarified that solution of inundation due to Indian dams on the borders will be sought diplomatically.

As per the ministry estimation, 382.2 million rupees is necessary to reinstate the physical infrastructures damaged by the floods and inundation in Terai while 2 billion 112.1 million rupees is required for long term solution to the problem seen so far.
